An historic but derelict building near Derby city centre is set for a major transformation after plans were approved to build 32 new apartments on a busy street. The former Derby Engineers Club building on Osmaston Road will undergo significant changes as part of this exciting Derby apartment development.

The applicant, Derby and Co Developments, plans to partly demolish the rear of the building, which was severely damaged by fire. The company will then renovate the remaining structure to create eight new apartments within the historic venue.

In addition to the renovation, the developer will construct three new three-storey apartment blocks behind the Engineers Club building. Each block will contain eight apartments, bringing the total number of new homes on the site to 32.

Preserving History While Building for the Future

The locally listed two-storey villa, built in 1824, was once a popular meeting place for engineers and their families. However, it has recently stood empty and boarded up, making it vulnerable to damage and neglect. More than two years ago, firefighters responded to a severe blaze that damaged two rooms at the rear of the property.

Derby City Council planning officers have approved the redevelopment plan, stating that the public benefits outweigh any potential harm to the historic building. The council’s decision highlights that the residential conversion is acceptable in principle, especially given the sustainable use of this brownfield site.
